LIVES OF COLOUR, FLORENCE NYSASMO-THOMAS
'FABRICS OF COLOUR'
Fabrics of colour was a live brief I engaged with during my time at univeristy. Fabrics of colour was a collaboration between 'Lives of Colour' and 'Super dry' that worked with ethnically and culturally diverse communities to provide a safe space of people of all ages to explore and engage in conversations regarding culture, history and heritage through the art of textiles.
For this live brief I was challenged to create a garment using kente cloth, an african textile fabric. Florence wanted the garment to be something that you would see someone wear just while working down the street but ensuring to incoporpate the African textile within it.
The garment I chose to make for this brief consisted of a corset bodice and a tailored skirt to the knee, only using the Kente cloth for my outer shells to ensure the print was on display from all angles.
DAVID THOMAS
STYLING BRIEF
David Thomas is a stylist based in LA who has worked with a number of celebrities, including John Legend, Lionel Richie, Britney Spears, Calvin Harris, Gerard Butler, Mark Hamill, David Beckham, Angelina Jolie and The Spice Girls. During his visit, he gave a good insight into the world of celebrity styling and the fashion industry.
He gave a good piece of advice during his visit;
“Don't compare yourself to others - fashion has no right or wrong. You should always try and be better every day. Not the best, just keep being busy and working at being better. If people trust in you then that’s great, because the most important thing about clothes is how they make you feel.”
The brief he I was presented with was a styling brief. The brief asked to create three ways I would personally style John Legend, in keeping with his person style / identity but also stamping my own mark on to it.
